Abstract:
Extracranial arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a rare but high-risk entity of all vascular malformations. Endovascular and surgical treatments become relatively well accepted. Challenges and dilemmas, however, still exist in the diagnosis and management of extracranial AVM. This up-to-date review focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of early-stage extracranial AVM, genetics and pathogenesis, the innovation and experience of surgical and endovascular techniques, and the development and expansion of novel embolization agents. In addition, we recognize that capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM), a special type of AVM, merits more investigation, in particular, in genetics and its relationship with AVM. This review proposes urgent issues and prospects for pioneers and experts to study extracranial AVM, so as to contribute to the advancement of this field.
