Effect of Umbilical Medicine Moxibustion for Primary Dysmenorrhea and Impact on Lower Abdominal Pain and Extra Time in Bed of Patients

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of umbilical medicine moxibustion on the duration and degree of lower ab-dominal pain and extra time in bed of patients with primary dysmenorrhea.METHODS 75 patients with primary dysmenor-rhea were randomly divided into umbilical medicine moxibustion group,umbilical starch moxibustion group and sanyinjiao acu-puncture group with 25 cases in each group.Lower abdominal pain and the extra time in bed which caused by pain were evalua-ted by Cox Menstrual Symptom Scale before treatment,and in the 1st,2nd and 3rd menstrual cycle after treatment as well as in the follow-up menstrual cycles.RESULTS After treatment,in the second and the third menstrual cycles,the duration of the pain and degree of lower abdominal pain were decreased more significantly in umbilical medicine moxibustion group than those of the other two groups(P <0.05~0.01);extra time in bed decreased significantly in umbilical medicine moxibustion group than that of the sanyinjiao acupuncture group(P <0.01).At follow-up period,the duration and degree of lower abdomi-nal pain and extra time in bed decreased more in umbilical medicine moxibustion group those of the other two groups(P <0.05~0.01).CONCLUSION The duration and degree of lower abdominal pain and extra time in bed were remarkably decreased in umbilical medicine moxibustion group compared with the other two groups,especially at the second,third menstrual cycle after treatment and follow-up period.The therapeutic effect of umbilical medicine moxibustion lasts longer.
