Effect of thermal cycling on the surface roughness of various resin composites

Abstract:
Objective To evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on the surface roughness of four resin composites with various matrix and fillers.Methods Two glass hybrid filled composites(Clearfil AP-X and Clearfil MAJESTY,Kurary) and two quartz hybrid filled composites(Filtek P60 and Filtek P90,3M ESPE) were tested.Filtek P90 was silorane-based resin composite,and the others were methacrylate-based resins.A total of 20 cubical specimens (n =5 per material) were obtained.After being polished,the mean surface roughness(Ra) of all of specimens was measured as the baselines.All specimens were thermocycled between 5 ℃ and 55 ℃ in distilled water for 10000 cycles with a dwell time of 30 seconds.Then,the specimens were subjccted to thermo cycling for another 10 000 cycles.Mean surface roughness(Ra) was measured at the end of each thermo cycling.The mean Ra values of resin composite were calculated and statistically analyzed by One-way ANOVA.Results Alter being polished,the Ra value of AP-X[(0.16 ± 0.03) μm] was statistically higher than that of Filtek P60 [(0.09 ± 0.01) μm],Filtek P90 [(0.09 ±0.02) μn] and MAJESTY[(0.08 ± 0.02)μm] (P ＜ 0.05).After 10000 cycles of thermal cycling,The Ra valus of the surface roughness of four tested resin composite did not change(P ＞ 0.05).But after 20000 cycles of thermal cycling,AP-X roughness [(0.20 ± 0.02) μm] increased (P ＜ 0.05).Conclusions Short periodof thermal cycling did not cause change of surface roughness of resin composites,but longer period of thermal cycling could increase the roughness.The surface characteristics of nanohybrid resin composite was improved significantly and the new silorane-based resin composite was satisfied.
