Abstract:
Objective One case of repeated elevation of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) induced by alendronate sodium in an elder osteoporosis woman was introduced to draw physicians'attention. Methods One elderly women with osteoporosis was treated with oral alendronate sodium 70 mg,once a week. The serum CEA was detected at an regular interval. The relationship between CEA elevation and alendronate sodium therapy was evaluated with Naranjo's assessment scale. Results and conclusion The serum level of CEA was repeatedly observed to gradually increase several weeks after treatment, while gradually decline after discontinuing the medication. The elevation of CEA took placed in a sequential manner in relation to the administration of alendronate sodium.Naranjo's assessment gave a total score of 8 points, indicating that CEA may be associated with the use of alendronate sodium.
