Abstract:
Objective To observe the effects of risperidone on lipids and thyroid hormone in patients with schizophrenia. Methods Forty-one cases of schizophrenia patients were enrolled from May to October in 2011 , respectively and were treated with risperidone alone for 8 weeks. The data of the total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density cholesterol ( LDL-C ) , and high density cholesterol ( HDL -C ) were measured before and after treatment. The data of three serum triiodothy-ronine (T3), thyroxine three (T4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine ( FT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone ( TSH) were detected. The changes were recorded and compared. Results After risperidone therapy, TG increased significantly compared with before treatment ( P<0.01).The data of T3, FT3 and FT4 decreased significantly ( P<0.01) .Conclusion Risperidone may cause abnormal drop of blood lipid and thyroid hormone level, therefore, related monitors should be strengthened to ensure the safety during treatment of schizophrenia patients.
