Abstract:
Objective To assess the efficacy and adverse reaction of methyl prednisolone for the treatment of patients with acute spinal cord injury ( ASCI ) .Methods Sixty cases with ASCI were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed in our hospital from 2010 to 2014.Thirty-two sub-jects in control group only received hemostasis, dehydration, and nerve nutrition and so on, based on which the twenty-eight subjects in treat-ment group received high dose of methyl prednisolone 30 mg? kg-1? h-1 through intravenous infusion less than 15 minutes and 45 minutes later, 5.4 mg? kg-1? h-1 methyl prednisolone was infused in 24 hours. The clinical efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated by American Spinal Injury Association ( ASIA) score before treatment and six weeks after treat-ment.Results The somatosensory and somatomotion scores were all improved after treatment in two groups(P<0.05), and both scores in the treatment group were much higher than those in the control group after treatment ( P<0.05).But the gastrointestinal reactions found in the treat-ment group were much more than those in the control group ( P<0.05). Conclusion Methyl prednisolone shock therapy can relieve spinal cord compression and reduce secondary neuronal damages, thereby it can improve the function of the spinal nerves, but with higher incidence of complications.
