- Abstract: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a disease closely associated with metabolic abnormalities and is currently one of the most common chronic liver diseases. Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles involved in a variety of metabolic and bioenergetic pathways in the liver, and they respond to environmental changes in a highly dynamic manner through mitochondrial dynamics. The circadian clock is able to modulate mitochondrial dynamics, making it exhibit rhythmic changes. In case of circadian rhythm disorders, mitochondrial dynamics loses rhythmicity, and mitochondria are unable to respond to changing energy demands in different environments, leading to the development and progression of NAFLD. This article summarizes the important role of circadian clock-controlled mitochondrial dynamics in the etiology of NAFLD.
