Abstract:
Objective To evaluate the outcomes of the operative treatment of cavernous hemangioma in the peripheral zone of the pineal body by modified occipital transtentorial approach. Methods Six cases of cavernous hemangioma in the peripheral zone of the pineal body, 2 in posterior thalamus, 3 in mesencephalon and 1 in the third ventricle, were analyzed retrospectively regarding their clinical manifestations, imaging data and prognosis after the surgeries via modified occipital transtentorial approach. Results Total removal of the lesion was achieved in all the patients without death. Neural system function was improved in 5 cases and aggravated in 1. There was no recurrence during the follow-up of average 11 months. Conclusion Based on the precise analysis of the lesion showed on the MRI, the microsurgical removal of cavernous hemangioma in the peripheral zone of the pineal body by modified occipital transtentorial approach is safe and effective.
