- Abstract: BACKGROUND:Neuronal autophagy disorder and abnormal protein aggregation are the main pathological changes of neurodegenerative diseases. The relationship and interaction between mesenchymal stem cells and autophagy represent a possible mechanism for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. OBJECTIVE:To review the research progress of autophagy and mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and their interaction in order to provide a theoretical basis and new ideas for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS:PubMed and CNKI databases were searched for relevant articles using"autophagy, neurodegenerative diseases, mesenchymal stem cells,Parkinson's disease,Alzheimer's disease"as the search terms in Chinese and English.Totally,59 articles were included for review. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)Autophagy homeostasis is beneficial for maintaining the stability of the internal and external environment of the central nervous system and for controlling the progression of neurodegenerative disease.(2)As a dynamic circulation mechanism to maintain cell renewal and equilibrium, autophagy can affect the biological functions of mesenchymal stem cells such as migration,survival,differentiation,anti-apoptosis and immune regulation, and optimize their therapeutic efficacy for diseases.(3)Mesenchymal stem cells are an important class of neuroprotective agents that can alleviate pathological features and improve dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases by regulating the level of cellular autophagy, which may be related to specific cellular conditions and activation levels in catabolic processes.
