Forensic Pathology is not a widely recognized field of medicine in the Philippines. Doctors involved in death investigation are often unskilled due to lack of formal training and their work is further hampered by insufficient support and material resources. Upon the authors return in 1995 from post-residency training in forensic pathology at a medical examiners office in the United States, she sought to establish a practice as a specialist based at the University of the Philippines Manila-Philippine General Hospital. This case review is the authors initial experience over the period 1996-2000. The procedures done and problems encountered are described, and recommendations on how the specialty can be professionalized are offered, Included are templates of actual worksheets for the guidance of local doctors doing forensic autopsies. The authors developed a comfortable program for routine work of surgical pathology. We used IBM PC (80386) and Foxbase plus program. The main function of this program was automatic coding and concurrent surgical report printing. During gross printing, previous biopsy number and its diagnosis were automatically searched and printed below gross description. The reported data were stored during surgical report printing simultaneously, and thus the typist's workload became considerably reduced. Search for specific cases could be performed by patient's name, surgical number, hospital number, diagnostic code numbers (SNOMED code micro glossary), and certain disease entities on very short duration.

This paper introduces a brief description of the legal system concerning the practice of forensic pathology and forensic medicine in Scotland. To aid understanding of forensic pathologic practice, the statistical analysis of post-mortem examinations at Glasgow, in 1998 is shown.

The authors selected 19 murder cases, which were reversed by the Supreme Court with citation of experts' opinions in its judgements. The original courts sentenced that 15 cases were guilty, and 4 cases innocent. There were 38 experts' opinions including 16 of both pathological and serological fields. Others are 2 for questioned documents, 1 for fingerprint, 1 for shoeprint, 1 for fire, 1 for material object. The Supreme Court kept the attitude paying regard to experts' opinions with rather strict interpretation of them. Also it had great concern about the procedures collecting evidences and rationalities of experts' opinions. In some cases, it pointed out that the original court should have investigated further to clarify the vague evidences and opinions. We commented briefly about some possible controversies on the experts' opinions and interpretations of the Supreme Court, strictly in the viewpoint of forensic pathology.
