Industrial bioprocess is a complex systematic process and bio-manufacturing can be realized on the basis of understanding the metabolism process of living cells. In this article, the multi-scale optimization principle and practice of industrial fermentation process are reviewed, including multi-scale optimizing theory and equipment, on-line sensing technology for cellular macroscopic metabolism, and correlated analysis of physiological parameters. Furthermore, intelligent control of industrial bioprocess is further addressed, in terms of new sensing technology for intracellular physiological metabolism, big database establishment and data depth calculation, intelligent decision.

With the rapid development of modern biotechnology, fermentation process is increasingly important in industrial production. To guarantee the stability of products, fermentation process should be elaborately monitored and controlled. Biomass is an important parameter for on-line monitoring in bioprocesses because biomass can reflect cell growth in a bioreactor directly. In-situ microscope, a non-invasive and image-analysis based technology, can real-time monitor cells in biological process. This review summarizes the development and application of in-situ microscopy in biomass monitoring.

Industrial biotechnology promises to make a significant contribution in enabling the sustainable development, and need the solid support from its basic discipline. As the basis of industrial biotechnology, industrial biology is to study the basic laws and mechanisms of biological behavior in industrial environment and to solve the key scientific problems for understanding, designing and constructing the organisms adapted to the application of industrial environment. In order to comprehend the status of industrial biology, we published this special issue to review the progress and trends of industrial biology from the three aspects of industrial protein science, cell science and fermentation science, respectively, for laying the foundation for the development of industrial biotechnology.

Industrial fermentation is the basic operation unit of industrial biotechnology in large-scale production. Mathematical simulation of microbial cells and their reactors will help deepen the understanding of microorganisms and fermentation processes, and will also provide solutions for the construction of new synthetic organisms. In this paper, the characteristics of industrial fermentation system, the development of mathematical simulation, the classification, characteristics and functions of mathematical models are described in depth, and the development trend of whole fermentation system simulation is prospected.

Microorganisms in nature have rich variety, whose sizes are from nano scale to micro scale. Therefore, microbes can be used as natural "building blocks" in nano/micro multi-level fabrication processes. At present, most of the bio-manufacturing methods do not apply to direct control of living microbes. Their microbiological global functions and superiorities are not available. In this paper, two novel nano/micro bio-fabrication approaches, micro-fluidic control method and magnetic control method have been established. The living microbes could be manipulated to form micro-scaled patterns or to move orientedly. By these approaches, living microbes are taken as nano/micro robots. We could employ their specific biological functions and regulate their controllable self-assembly, which is expected to design and create a series of new special functional materials and devices.

Medical biotechnology is technical solutions using biological properties of cells and of biological moleculars for diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis. Considerable achievements were gained in Vietnam despite it was applied lately and the investment in medical biotechnology is lower. These achievements include early detection and diagnosis of genes causing cancers like throat-nose cancer, liver cancer, some bacterial and viral infections, some hereditary diseases, bio-products for treatment like anti-rabies serum, anti-venom serum, and vaccines for diphtheria, pertussis, tentanus, hepatitis B, hepatitis A (Havax), Japanese encephalitis, polio and typhoid.

Wastewater resources, CO2 emission reduction and microalgae biodiesel are considered as current frontier fields of energy and environmental researches. In this paper, we reviewed the progress in system of microalgae culture for biodiesel production by wastewater and stack gas. Multiple factors including microalgal species, nutrition, culture methods and photobioreactor, which were crucial to the cultivation of microalgae for biodiesel production, were discussed in detail. A valuable culture system of microalgae for biodiesel production or other high value products combined with the treatment of wastewater by microalgae was put forward through the optimizations of algal species and culture technology. The culture system coupled with the treatment of wastewater, the reduction of CO2 emission with the cultivation of microalgae for biodiesel production will reduce the production cost of microalgal biofuel production and the treatment cost of wastewater simultaneously. Therefore, it would be a promising technology with important environmental value, social value and economic value to combine the treatment of wastewater with the cultivation of microalgae for biodiesel production.

Microbe is extremely abundant in nature, and its size has a very wide coverage from nano- to micro-scale making it suitable to be processed at multi-scale level as natural "building blocks" and "chassis cells". Biofabrication based on microbes is an artificial manipulation on microbes to assemble functional materials and devices by using the specific structures and various biological functions of microbes. In the meantime, the novel strategies of biofarication enables us to study the behavioral details of microbes, which will provide new platforms for uncovering the unsolved basic scientific problems of microbes. In this paper, we reviewed the frontier and progress in biofabrication from nano- and micro-scale in microbes that were manipulated as structured "building blocks" or functional "micro/nano robots".

The advances of industrial biotechnology highly depend on the development of industrial bioprocess researches. In China, we are facing several challenges because of a huge national industrial fermentation capacity. The industrial bioprocess development experienced several main stages. This work mainly reviews the development of the industrial bioprocess in China during the past 30 or 40 years: including the early stage kinetics model study derived from classical chemical engineering, researching method based on control theory, multiple-parameter analysis techniques of on-line measuring instruments and techniques, and multi-scale analysis theory, and also solid state fermentation techniques and fermenters. In addition, the cutting edge of bioprocess engineering was also addressed.
