Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory began its doctoral program in 1999, but its training model is very distinctive and has been emulated by many institutes. Its features are mainly embodied in the following aspects:the aim of cultivating outstanding talent, the idea of lifelong learning, the system of“two-tier”mentoring program, the security measure of tuition paid in full by the school and the free and open environment. To learn from those advanced training experience, great efforts should be made in our doctoral cultivation mode in the aspects of enrollment system, education resources allocation method, and the training objective and emphasis.

Objective To analyze the characteristics of contributions and the reasons why Chinese authors engaged in scientific research favor to contribute their papers to PLoS One by comparing the papers published in PLoS One and its series by authors from China and other countries.Methods Papers published in PLoS One by Chinese au-thors engaged in scientific research were retrieved from Web of Science by setting the retrieval parameters and ana-lyzed.Results The number of papers published in PLoS One series by authors from China increased rapidly.The number of papers published in PLoS One was significantly larger than that published in other PLoS One series. Conclusion The scientific research scale is unceasingly expanded.Why the Chinese authors engaged in scientific research favor to contribute their papers to PLoS One are due to its attractive power and the guidance of scientific and technological evaluation management in China.

Objective To investigate the expression and significance of ?-endorphin in hippocampus after high power microwave (HPM) radiation. Methods 50 male Wistar rats were sacrificed at 6h, 1d, 3d, 7d, 14d, 28 days after exposure to 12mW/cm~2 HPM imitational source radiation. The hippocampus was harvested, the characteristics of injury to the hippocampus and expression of ?-endorphin were evaluated by means of light microscope, EM, immunohistochemistry and image analysis. Results In the neutrons of hippocampus, mitochondrial swelling and myelin sheath confluence and dissociation were observed 6 hours after radiation, and mitochondrial swelling, cavitation, disruption of crista, concentration margining of chromatin, blurring of synaptic cleft, piling or evacuation of vesicles were observed 3 days after HPM radiation. The expression of ?-endorphin in cytoplasm of neurons was up-regulated continuously from 1 to 7 days, peaking at 7 days, restoring to normal level from 14 to 28 days after radiation. Conclusion HPM can produce injury to the hippocampus at histological and ultrastructural levels. The expression of ?-endorphin is up-regulated, and it might play an important role in the pathophysiological process of injury and repair in the hippocampus.

To improve the science principle of input-output evaluation in medical research institutions,this study uses literature research and expert interviews to make a comparison between domestic and foreign evaluation criterion.There are several problems about input-output evaluation in medical research institutions in China,such as less flexibility and targeted methods,inappropriate models,inadequate indicators and quantitative metrics.Seveal combinations of elements should be considered for input-output evaluation in medical research institutions,which is parallels and distinctions,qualitative and quantitative methods,quality and quantity,process and results,focus and full,and also emphasis on the application of information technology.

Patent literature is an important source of technological information.A comparative analysis of patents of military medical research institutions of the US Armed Forces in THOMSON INNOVATION patent database could reveal their research achievements and development,and provide inspiration and reference for the innovation and development of our military medical science.

Biodefense research based on modern information technology is an important supplement to traditional biode -fense capacity building and an important part of the national biodefense system in the 21st century.This article outlines the typical biodefense information systems developed in the last ten years and analyzes the development trends of this research field.It is hoped that more domestic research institutions or researchers can become interested in this field .

Translational medicine is a more effective and efficient way to improve the investment return on bioscience and provide equitable access to high—quality healthcare.Recognizing the need for a new impetus to spur clinical and translational research,the National Institutes of Health established the Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program.

BACKGROUND:The residual alveolar ridge in edentulous patients with osteoporosis always presents with a poor shape,which increases the difficulty in complete denture restoration.Until now,there are no predictors for residual alveolar ridge resorption or guidelines on the frequency of denture relines.OBJECTIVE:To investigate the correlation between the frequency of complete denture relines and serum bone turnover markers,osteocalcin (OC) and cross-linked carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type Ⅰ collagen (CTX),in elderly edentulous patients with osteoporosis,in order to provide reference for complete denture repair.METHODS:According to inclusion criteria,50 elderly edentulous patients with osteoporosis who had complete dentures were recruited in the study randomly.The frequency of complete denture relines was surveyed by related questionnaire and medical record,and the serum OC and CTX levels were detected by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay.Related data were analyzed statistically via Pearson correlation analysis.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:It showed a strong positive correlation between the frequency of complete denture relines and the serum OC level (r=0.517,P ＜ 0.01).No significant correlation between relines frequency and the serum CTX level was observed (r=0.278,P=0.051 ＞ 0.05),but it showed a similar tendency between them.These findings indicate that to detect the levels of serum bone turnover markers may be conducive to evaluating curative effect of complete dentures in elderly edentulous patients with osteoporosis as well as to making subsequent diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

For medical student, diagnostic practice is the first step of clinical study. To penetrate the humanities education in diagnostic teaching,the combination with practice from the following steps as physical examination, laboratory examination and interrogation, would cultivate medical students' humane quality imperceptibly and play an important role in creating noble medical ethics of them.

Objective To evaluate a normative and systematic training mode for teachers of community general practice.Methods A total of 16 general practice teachers,who came from Fenglin community health service centre in Shanghai,participated three-stage training mode during March 2011 to February 2012.The clinical competence evaluation and questionnaire survey were conducted before and after training.Fifty trainees trained by the teachers also received clinical competence evaluation.Results After the three-stage training,the test score in medical knowledge,physical examination and clinical skills of the teachers did not change significantly (P =0.794,0.674 and 0.326).The self assessment questionnaire survey of general practice teachers indicated a significant increase,especially in practice capability (t =-2.840,P =0.015) and overall quality (t =-3.017,P =0.011).After training by the teachers,the medical knowledge (t =-9.200,P =0.000),physical examination (t =-9.947,P =0.000) and clinical skills (t =-14.828,P =0.000) of 50 trainees increased markedly.Conclusions Differed from conventional training courses,the three-stage training enhances teaching ability and overall quality of community general practice teachers,and provides a effective training model.
