1.Herbal Medicines-Analytical Challenges Faced by Regulatory Laboratory

In the lecture, the regualtion on complementary medicine in TGA Australia has been briefly introduced. The minor active or harmful constituents and too many unknown components comtained in herbal medicine need to be detected is the analytical challenge faced by regulatory laboratory in Australia. The examples demonstrated what efforts the laboratory has made painstaking to establish chromatographic fingerprinting to meet the aim for quality control of herbal medicine which marketed in Australia. The principle and key factors for chromatographic fingerprint technique has been described.
2.Antioxidant Effects of Munziq and Mushil of Abnormal Savda by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance

To explore the antioxidant mechanism of munziq and mushil of Abnormal Savda. Scavenging effects of munziq and mushil of Abnormal Savda on superoxide anion radical(O -? 2) and hydroxyl radical (OH ?) were measured by electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR). Munziq and mushil possessed obvious scavenging effects on O -? 2 and OH ? and the effect of mushil was superior to that of the munziq.[Conclusion] The EPR is a reliable, effective, accurate, sensitive method for measuring the antioxidant properties of herbal medicines. Munziq and mushil are two kinds of effective antioxidants, and the antioxidant effect may be one of the therapeutic mechanisms of munziq and mushil.
3.Effect of Naoxinqing Tablet for Cerebral Atherosclerosis and Angina Pectoris of Coronary Heart Disease: An Observation of 60 Cases

To assess the effect and the safety of Naoxinqing Tablet in treating cerebral atherosclerosis and angina pectoris of coronary heart disease. Forty-eight patients with cerebral atherosclerosis and 12 patients with angina pectoris of coronary heart disease served as the objects. The effective rates were 83.33% and 75.00% in cerebral atherosclerosis group and angina pectoris of coronary heart disease group respectively, and the total effective rate of Naoxinqing Tablet was 81.67%, the difference being significant as compared with those before treatment (P
4.Influence of Ethyl Alcohol on Purgative Action of Rhubarb

Experimental studies showed that the water extract of rhubarb had low content of anthraquinone and a strong purgative while the alcohol extract a high content of anthraquinone and was free of purgative action,even tannin was eliminated.The purgative action of the water extract was also last when mixed with alcohol extract. The experimental results coincide with the traditional experience in Chinese medicinal theory:"the fresh Rhubarb has a purgative action while rhubarb prepared with wine can promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis."However, from the angle of anthraquinone and tannin, the explanation is unreasonable. It is indicated that the purgative action of rhubarb is greatly influenced, even disappears when prepared with alcohol. So, attention should be paid in the preparation process of Chinese patent drugs containing rhubarb.
5.Studies on HPLC Fingerprint of Danshen Glucose Injection

Objective: To establish the fingerprint of Danshen Glucose Injection by HPLC. Methods: Separation was performed on an Alltima C18(4.6mm?250mm,5?m) analytical column, with mobile phase consisting of 1 %acetic-water and 1 %acetic acid-methanol and with gradient elute at the flow rate of 1mL/min-1. The UV detection was set at 281nm. Results: Six peaks of Danshen Glucose Injection wre indicated, and the chief ingredients were determined by HPLC. Conclusion: This method is accurate and with good reproducibility and can be used for the quality control of Danshen Glucose Injection.

Objective To study the influences of polysacch arides(PS)from Radix Codonopsis on immune function and hematopoiesis in mice.Methods Several experiments have been condu cted for detecting delayed type hypersensitivity(DTH),hemolysin antibody concentration,endogenous spleen colony,3 H-TdRpermeate nuleated cells in bon e marrow.Results By oral administration,PS from Radix Codonopsis can promote the humoral immunity and PS at a small dosage en-hance the cellular immunity.PS from Radix Codonopsis can also elevate the hemoglobin cont ent of the hemolysis -induced blood -deficiency mice and increase the formation of endogenous spleen c olony,but has less effect on DNA synt hesis in the bone marrowof blood -deficiency mic e caused by 60 Co -?ray.Conclusion PS from Radix Codonopsis can enhance the im-mune function and improve the compen satory hematopoiesis of spleen and t heir mechanisms need to be further studied.
8.Effect of Buzhong Yiqi Decoction for Allergic Rhinitis with Spleen-qi Deficiency in Guinea Pigs

Objective To investigate the effect of Buzhong Yiqi Decoction for allergic rhinitis(AR)with spleen -qi de-ficiency in guinea pigs.Methods AR guinea -pig model was established by intraperitoneal injection of ovalbumin for general sensitization and then by nasal drip of ovalbumin for local sensitization.Spleen -qi deficiency mod el was induced by gastric infusion of cold -maceration extract of Radix et Rhizoma Rhei.Fifty -four guinea pigs were randoml y allocated to four groups:AR group(Group A),AR model with spleen -qi deficiency group(Group B),AR model with spleen -qi deficiency treated by Buzhong Yiqi group(Group C)and blank control group(Group D).Nasal symptoms were observed.The number of eosinophils(EOS )in nasal secretion was detected by sm ear cytologic examination and the number of EOS and mastocyte in nasal mucosa was exa mined by pathological section.Results Before local sensitization,nasal s ymp-toms such as nose scratching,sneezing and nasal discharge in Group A,Gro up B and Group C were severer than those in Group D and were improved in Group C in the late stage.Positive rate of EOS i n nasal secretion and nasal mucosa of Group C and Group D was lower than that in Group A and Group B and the differen ce was insignificant between Group C and Group D.The number of mastocyte i n Group C was lower than that in Group A and Group B.Conclusion Buzhong Yiqi Decoction can relieve nasal symptom s in AR Guinea pigs with spleen -qi deficiency by counteracting the infiltration of EOS and the increase of nastocytes in nasal mucosa.
9.A Study on Quality Standard of Compound Huangqin Tablets

Objective To establish the standard for the quality control of Compound Huangqin Tablets. Methods The identification of Radix Scutellariae,Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati and Caulis Mahoniae in compound Huangqin tablets were carried out by TLC.The content of baicalin in the preparation was determined by HPLC.Chromatocolumn was adopted,methanol-0.4 %H3PO4(50 ∶50) used as the mobile phase,flowrate 1.4mL/min,column temperature at 40 ℃and detection wavelength 278 nm . Results The TLC spots were highly clear without the interference of negative control and were reproductive. The calibration curve for baicalin was linear (r=0.9996) in the range of 0.12~0.72 ?g and the mean recovery was 97.17 %and RSD=1.78 %(n=5). Conclusion This method can be used for the quality control of Compound Huangqin Tablets.
10.Studies on Quality Control of Gushuling Capsule

Objective To study the quality control standard of Gushuling capsule. Methods Fructus Psoraleae and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi in Gushuling capsule were identified by TLC; The content of ieariin was determined by HPLC with acetonitrile-water (30: 70) as mobile phase and the wavelength at 270 nm. Results TLC identification was positive; the linear range of icariin was 0.0968~0.4840 ?g(r=0.9999), the average recovery was 97.27%(RSD=1.88%, n=5). Conclusion This method can be used as a standard of the quality control for Gushuling capsule.
