1.Association of nutritional status using the short nutritional assessment questionnaire (SNAQ) and malnutrition risk using the malnutrition screening tool (MST) with in-hospital mortality and intensive care unit admission among non-critically-ill patients: A single center, prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE
Although nutritional assessment tools have been available internationally, local data for their use in foreseeing adverse outcomes among admitted patients are currently unavailable. The primary objective of this study was to determine the association of nutritional status using Short Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire (SNAQ) and malnutrition risk using the MST (Malnutrition Screening Tool) with ICU admission and in-hospital mortality.
METHODOLOGYThis was a prospective-cohort study which included 122 purposively-selected adult participants who were non-intubated, admitted for medical and surgical managements, stayed for at least 24 hours, had no COVID-19 infection, and were not admitted in any critical care unit. The SNAQ and MST questionnaires, which are validated tools and consists of two to three easy-to-answer questions, were used among the participants and their scores were tallied in order to get their nutritional status and malnutrition risk. Primary endpoints measured were length of hospital stay, incidence of mortality, and ICU admission rate. Comorbidities were taken into account using the Charlson Comorbidity Index.
RESULTCategorizing the SNAQ scores showed 33.61% were severely malnourished which was similar when using the MST classification, wherein 34.43% were at risk of malnutrition. None of the participants were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Malnutrition risk and nutritional status was not significantly associated with 30-day in-hospital mortality (p >0.05). On the other hand, results of the Cox proportional hazards showed that SNAQ and MST significantly predicted the hazard of 30-day in-hospital mortality, increasing the hazard of mortality by 2.58 times and 3.67 times, respectively, for every 1-unit increase in SNAQ and MST scores. Similarly, nutritional status using the SNAQ classification indicated the severely malnourished category significantly predicted the hazard of mortality, increasing it by 9.22 times for those who are severely malnourished. Also, malnutrition risk using the MST classification indicated that those who were at risk of malnutrition were 9.80 times at greater hazard of mortality than those who were not at risk of malnutrition.
CONCLUSIONThe MST and SNAQ classification are screening tools for nutritional status (SNAQ) and malnutrition risk (MST) that can be administered at the onset of the patient’s hospital course and have been demonstrated in this study to predict 30-day in-hospital mortality. It is important to note that none of the patients included in this study required intensive care unit admission.

Specifically, it seeks to assess micronutrient inadequacy among these individuals and analyze differences in food intake based on their sociodemographic profiles and lifestyle habits.
METHODSThis analytical cross-sectional study utilized data from the Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) conducted in 2018, 2019, and 2021 by the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI). A total of 3,154 overweight and obese subjects were included. ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were employed to analyze the food groups consumed by these adults.
RESULTSMajority of overweight and obese adults were found to be inadequate in vitamin A (81.7%), vitamin C (88.4%), thiamin (62.5%), riboflavin (70.7%), iron (69.8%), and calcium (88.7%). Significant differences were observed in the mean intake of various food groups across different age groups, sexes, civil statuses, wealth quintiles, educational attainments, employment statuses, and smoking and drinking statuses.
CONCLUSIONFilipino adults who are overweight and obese, and residing in urban settings face significant challenges related to micronutrient inadequacy. When their food intake was assessed based on sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, it was found that their diets were more calorie-dense than nutrient-dense. To address this issue, it is recommended to encourage a wider variety of nutrient-dense foods among overweight and obese adults.

3.Clinicodemographic profile and treatment outcomes of patients with upper aerodigestive tract foreign bodies in the Southern Philippines Medical Center: A five-year retrospective review

Objective:
This study aims to describe the clinicodemographic profile of patients with foreign bodies in the upper aerodigestive tract and their treatment outcomes.
Methods:
Design: Retrospective review of records. Setting: Tertiary Government Training Hospital. Participants: Records of 304 patients diagnosed with aerodigestive foreign bodies
Results:
Three hundred-four (304) patients were included. The median age was 5.26 years in the pediatric age group and 42.53 years in the adult age group, with a male-to female ratio = 1.97:1. Foreign bodies were ingested in 291 (96%) patients while aspiration occurred in 13 (4%). Overall, 211 (69%) of cases involved the pediatric population (<19 years) and 93 (31%) the adult population. The most common foreign bodies reported were coins (63.5%), food (18.1%), and dentures (11.5%). Most esophageal foreign bodies (244/291; 83%) were seen at the cricopharyngeal level in all age groups. The foreign body was removed successfully in 288/291 (98%) of ingestion cases. All 13 cases of foreign body aspiration were successfully removed by bronchoscopy. All patients were discharged improved.
Conclusion
Most upper aerodigestive tract foreign bodies involved the pediatric age group.
Predisposing conditions were mainly due to accidental ingestion and aspiration while playing in the pediatric population and negligence in eating among adults. Almost all ingestion cases were successfully treated with esophagoscopy, while all aspirations were treated successfully with bronchoscopy. Most intraoperative and postoperative complications who were managed conservatively by observation, although some cases required referral to other surgical departments and were treated surgically. All patients were discharged improved.

5.Assessment on the body image and eating behaviors among senior high school students at Colegio De Santa Catalina De Alejandria, Dumaguete City

Background:
The increasing body image dissatisfaction and disordered eating attitudes among adolescents have become a public health concern globally. Detection and prompt intervention could save adolescents from physiological and psychological health problems.
Objectives:
The objective of this study was to determine the body image and eating behavior among senior high school students at Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria enrolled in the school year 2020- 2021 and if there is any relationship between their eating behaviors and body image.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study was conducted on August 2020 to July 2021 at Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria in Dumaguete City. The study utilized the questionnaires: Eating Attitude Test- 26 (EAT-26) in identifying the risk for eating disorders and the Stunkard Scale for the assessment of body image. The participants of the study were Grade 11 & 12 Senior high school students enrolled in the school year 2020-2021. Descriptive statistics including frequency, percentages, mean and standard deviation were calculated for each variable (age, sex, height and weight). The Spearman’s rank-order correlation was used to analyze the data in determining any relationship between the body image and eating behaviors of the participants. Result: Body dissatisfaction was noted in a portion of female respondents. EAT-26 was considered positive and confirmed the presence of eating attitudes that were associated with risks for the development of eating behavior disorders in 55% of the sample population. A positive correlation between EAT-26 scores and the body image was also observed among female respondents.
Conclusion
The results indicate that attention must be given to eating behavior risks within this group.

7.Research progress in effect of chewing-side preference on temporomandibular joint and its relationship with temporo-mandibular disorders.

Chewing-side preference is one of the risk factors for temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and people with chewing-side preference is more prone to have short and displaced condyles, increased articular eminence inclination and glenoid fossa depth. The proportion of TMD patients with chewing-side preference is often higher than that of the normal subjects. Clinical studies have shown a strong correlation between chewing-side preference and TMD symptoms and signs; and animal studies have shown that chewing-side preference can affect the growth, development, damage and repair of the mandible. After long-term unilateral mastication, changes in the stress within the joint cause the imbalance of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) structural reconstruction, the transformation and even destruction of the fiber structure of masticatory muscle, resulting in uncoordinated movement of bilateral muscles. The joint neurogenic diseases caused by the increase of neuropeptide substance P and calcitonin-gene-related-peptide (CGRP) released locally by TMJ may be the mechanism of TMD. This article reviews the research progress of the influence of chewing-side preference on the structure of TMJ, the relationship between chewing-side preference and TMD, and the related mechanisms.

Perfluorinated compounds, especially Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), are widely detected in water environments in China. Considering the potential health risks of drinking water exposure routes, PFOA and PFOS have been added to the water quality reference index of the newly issued "Standards for Drinking Water Quality (GB5749-2022)", with limit values of 40 and 80 ng/L, respectively. This study analyzed and discussed the relevant technical contents for determining the limits of the hygiene standard, including the environmental existence level and exposure status of PFOA and PFOS, health effects, derivation of safety reference values, and determination of hygiene standard limits. It also proposed prospects for the future direction of formulating drinking water standards.

Perchlorate is an environmental pollutant that has been a focus of attention in recent years. It has been detected in many environmental water bodies and drinking water in China, with a high level of presence in some areas of the Yangtze River Basin. The human body may ingest perchlorate through exposure pathways such as drinking water and food, and its main health effect is to affect the thyroid's absorption of iodine. The "Standards for Drinking Water Quality" (GB5749-2022) includes perchlorate as an expanded indicator of water quality, with a limit value of 0.07 mg/L. This article analyzes the technical content related to the determination of hygiene standard limits for perchlorate in drinking water, including the environmental presence level and exposure status of perchlorate, main health effects, derivation of safety reference values, and determination of hygiene standard limits.
