RATIONALE
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in fair-skinned populations. Overall, strategies focus on modifiable risk factors such as reducing ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure through physical, topical or systemic protection. Currently, data on knowledge, attitude and practices of Filipino patients on UV index in relation to sun protection is unavailable.
OBJECTIVESThe objective of this study is to improve sunscreen use among patients seen in a tertiary hospital in Manila, specifically after UV index education.
METHODOLOGY AND POPULATIONThe study will be conducted among patients at the outpatient department of the University of Santo Tomas Hospital, Department of Dermatology, after UV index education. Patients who will be included are aged 18 to 65 years old, belonging to both sexes and able to understand English or Filipino. The exclusion criteria includes children, elderly greater than the age of 65, prisoners, mentally handicapped or those with incurable diseases.

2.Knowledge, attitude, and practices on sunscreen use among acne vulgaris patients: A cross-sectional study in the National Capital Region and Region 4A

BACKGROUND
Acne patients often use medications, either over the counter or prescribed by dermatologists, to manage their condition. Dermatologists frequently include sunscreens as part of these treatment plans alongside acne medications. This research aims to determine the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding sunscreen use among respondents who are confirmed acne patients and have been prescribed sunscre-en as part of their treatment regimen.
OBJECTIVEThis research examines the current knowledge, attitudes, and practices of acne patients regarding sunscreen use as part of their acne t reatment regimen, considering demographic factors. The knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the respondents will be compared across different age groups, genders, and employment statuses.
METHODSThis study purposefully collected data from patients with active acne on the use of sunscreens alongside acne medications. The sample included males and females aged 18-27, 28-40, and 40+ residing in either the National Capital Region or the CALABARZON Region, with 105 respondents in each group. Data was gathered using a validated Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) questionnaire, consisting of 30 questions that had undergone reliability testing via Cronbach's alpha. Responses were recorded on a 3-point Likert scale to model the interaction of KAP variables. The research material was distributed through Google Forms in June 2024. Data analysis was conducted using R, specifically the psych package, and the Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to compare groups, determining if significant differences existed among them. This test was incorporated within RStudio.
RESULTSFindings indicated that respondents generally demonstrated a high level of understanding regarding the importance of sunscreen when used alongside acne treatments, particularly acknowledging its role in preventing acne scarring and reducing skin sensitivity caused by treatment products. Additionally, attitudes toward sunscreen use were largely positive, with respondents rejecting common misconceptions about sunscreen. However, actual sunscreen application practices were moderate, with adherence levels varying across the sample. Significant differences in sunscreen use were observed based on employment status, gender, and age.
CONCLUSIONAcne patients in this study had a high level of knowledge and a positive attitude on the use of sunscreen together with their acne medications. consistency in sunscreen application was moderate. unemployed respondents were more receptive to external influences regarding sunscreen use. Female respondents were more informed and proactive than male respondents. Younger respondents were more influenced by social networks. This research highlights the need for continued education on the benefits of sunscreen use to be able to achieve an effective acne vulgaris management.

3.Comparison of the surgical outcomes of minimal incision and elliptical excision in treating epidermal inclusion cysts: A single-center, randomized controlled trial

INTRODUCTION
Epidermal inclusion cysts require surgical intervention to prevent recurrence and symptoms. Elliptical excision is definitive but results in longer scar, while minimal incision techniques offer better cosmetic outcomes despite higher recurrence rates probably due to incomplete excision. To date, there are currently no local studies published.
METHODOLOGYA randomized controlled trial was conducted from October 2023 to May 2024 at a dermatology center in the Philippines. Patients were randomly assigned to minimal incision or elliptical excision techniques. Key metrics included operation time, scar length, post-operative complications, Hollander wound evaluation score (HWES), and histopathological completeness of excision.
RESULTSMedian operation duration was 31.86 minutes, with no significant difference between techniques (p = 0.5795). Post-operative scars were longer in the excision group (mean: 2.38 ± 0.66 cm) versus the minimal incision group (p < 0.001). Completeness of excision was higher in the excision group (83%) compared to the minimal incision group (27%) (p = 0.0123). Follow-up scar length was shorter in the minimal incision group (mean: 0.44 ± 0.21 cm) versus the excision group (mean: 2.1 ± 0.63 cm) (p < 0.001). HWES scores showed no significant difference in wound healing and aesthetic satisfaction.
CONCLUSIONMinimal incision technique results in shorter scars but lower completeness of excision compared to elliptical excision. Both techniques have similar long-term outcomes in wound healing and aesthetic satisfaction, with no recurrences or complications beyond two weeks. The choice should balance scar length and completeness of cyst removal, considering patient-specific factors.

4.Applications of bioactive peptides in cosmeceuticals: a review.

The cosmetic sector is a multibillion-dollar industry that requires constant attention being paid to innovative product development and engagement. Notably, its market value is projected to exceed 750 billion U.S. dollars by 2025, and it is expanding as novel, climate-friendly, green, and sustainable components from natural sources are incorporated. This review is written based on the numerous reports on the potential applications of food-derived peptides while focusing on their possible uses in the formulation of cosmeceutical and skincare products. First, the production methods of bioactive peptides linked to cosmeceutical uses are described. Then, we discuss the obtainment and characterization of different anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-aging, and other pleiotropic peptides with their specific mechanisms, from various food sources. The review concludes with salient considerations of the cost of production and pilot scale operation, stability, compatibility, user safety, site-specificity, and delivery methods, when designing or developing biopeptide-based cosmeceutical products.

5.Efficacy of 1% povidone-iodine mouthwash combined with scaling and root planing in the treatment of periodontitis: a randomized, controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES:
This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of 1% povidone-iodine mouthwash combined with scaling and root planing in patients with stage Ⅰ/Ⅱ class A/B periodontitis, and to provide a basis for the clinical application of povidone-iodine mouthwash.
METHODS:
Seventy-five subjects were included in this trial and randomly divided into three groups. After full-mouth ultrasonic supragingival cleansing, scaling and root planing, the placebo group was treated with sodium chloride injection (NaCl group), the control group was treated with compound chlorhexidine mouthwash (CHX group), and the experimental group was treated with 1% povidone-iodine mouthwash (PVP-I group), and rinsed their mouths for 1 week, respectively. Subjects were tested at 1, 4, and 12 weeks after dosing for clinical indicators, microbial composition of supragingival plaque, gingival crevicular fluid inflammatory marker levels, and patient-reported outcomes.
RESULTS:
Sixty-three subjects completed the follow-up. After treatment, the clinical indicators, microbial indicators, and inflammatory indicators were all significantly improved (P<0.05). Comparisons among the groups showed that one week after treatment, the bleeding index and plaque index of the CHX group and the PVP-I group were lower than those of the NaCl group, and the plaque index of the CHX group was lower than that of the PVP-I group (P<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the other clinical indicators among the groups (P>0.05). Twelve weeks after treatment, the Shannon index of the CHX group was lower than that of the NaCl group (P<0.05), and there were no statistically significant differences in the other microbial indicators among the groups (P>0.05). Twelve weeks after treatment, the interleukin-10 concentration of the CHX group was higher than that of the NaCl group (P<0.05), and there were no statistically significant differences in the other inflammatory indicators among the groups (P>0.05). The PVP-I group had the highest scores in terms of taste and oral odor. There was no obvious staining on the tooth surfaces and mucosa in all three groups.
CONCLUSIONS
1% PVP-I mouthwash combined with scaling and root planing can effectively reduce gingival inflammation and dental plaque, improve clinical symptoms in the short term. While its efficacy is not significantly inferior to that of chlorhexidine, PVP-I mouthwash is more acceptable to patients than chlorhexidine.

Severe allergic reactions to hydrogen peroxide solution and compound chlorhexidine gargle are rare, and most medical professionals have limited understanding of such cases. This article reports a case of anaphylactic shock in a patient with a periodontal abscess following oral flushing with hydrogen peroxide and compound chlorhexidine gargle. Drawing on domestic and international literature, it provides a reference for the emergency management of serious adverse reactions caused by these agents.

7.Advances in yeast biosynthesis of triterpenoids for cosmetic applications.

Triterpenoids in cosmetic raw materials have attracted much attention due to their various skin-care effects such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and moisturizing properties, showing broad application prospects. However, the conventional methods such as chemical synthesis and plant extraction for obtaining triterpenoid have problems like poor sustainability, which limit their application in large-scale production. In recent years, with the development of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering, yeast synthesis of compounds has provided a green and sustainable alternative for the production of triterpenoids. This article reviews the research progress in the synthesis of triterpenoids and their derivatives in the cosmetic field and elaborates on the two main synthesis pathways (mevalonate and methylerythritol phosphate pathways) and their advantages and limitations in different microbial hosts. In addition, this article introduces the current status of the synthesis of triterpenoids and their derivatives in yeast, discusses the current strategies for increasing the yield, and looks ahead to the future development directions, aiming to promote the applications of triterpenoids in the cosmetic field.

Background:
Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common skin inflammatory reaction occurring at the site of challenge with a contact allergen in sensitized individuals and one of the most common causes for consultation in dermatology clinics. Patch testing is a method for detecting the causative component in suspected cases of ACD. Awareness about the causative allergen aids in reducing morbidity and can significantly minimize the impact of ACD in the affected people.
Objectives:
The study aimed to measure the number of relevant positive reactions in patch tests being performed in our institution in patients with ACD to cosmetic products.
Methods:
A total of 60 patients who were diagnosed with ACD to cosmetics and underwent patch testing were reviewed to identify the clinico‑epidemiological and patch test profiles of these patients.
Results:
The study showed that the mean age of patients was 42 comprising mostly of females. Most of the
patients were unemployed, office workers, and medical workers. The most common cosmetic products that caused ACD include soaps, shampoos, lotions, and moisturizers. Nickel is still the most tested positive among these patients, followed by fragrance mixes and 4‑phenylenediamine base. They are widely distributed in cosmetic products, especially in soaps and lotions. The pattern of dermatitis revealed facial dermatitis to be the most common reason for consult of these patients.
Conclusion
Patch test is valuable in the setting of establishing the etiology of ACD to cosmetic products.

In China, the current standard for cosmetic adverse reactions related skin disease (GB/T 17149.1-1997) was jointly issued by the Ministry of Health and the State Bureau of Technical Supervision in 1997, cosmetic-allergic adverse reactions include allergic contact dermatitis and photo-allergic contact dermatitis according to this standard. The increasing use and changes in cosmetic ingredients or formula lead to a significant increase for the incidence of adverse reactions as the cosmetics industry is developing rapidly in the last 20 years. In the meantime, the clinical manifestations have become more diverse. In recent years, there have been many reports on the special manifestations for cosmetic allergy and allergen test, which provide a reference for the subsequent improvement of the diagnosis and prevention.

10.Report on a case of significant increase in urine mercury due to excessive mercury in cosmetics.

Mercury is highly toxic and can be absorbed through skin contact. From December 5, 2020 to February 16, 2021, occupational disease laboratory of the First People's Hospital of Baiyin received 30 urine mercury test samples from a beauty salon in Lanzhou City. The test results showed that 28 samples exceeded the normal value (normal value: 4 μg/g Cr) . 15 patients were treated with sodium dimertopropyl sulfonate for mercury removal and tiopron for liver protection, and the prognosis was good.
