LC-MS/MS-based molecular networking was used to guide the targeted isolation of terpenylated coumarins from the barks of Ailanthus altissima. Five known terpenylated coumarins (1–5), along with two simple coumarins (6 and 7), were isolated from the CH 2 Cl 2 -soluble fraction. Their structures were determined using spectroscopic techniques, including 1D and 2D NMR and LC-HR-MS/MS. Notably, altissimacoumarins C (1), F (3), and H (4) demonstrated potent inhibition of LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages, with IC50 values of 36.1, 27.9, and 11.2 μM, respectively. These results demonstrate the antiinflammatory properties of A. altissima, supporting its possible application in treating inflammatory disorders.

Annals of Dermatology 2026;38(3):237-247
Background:
Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory scalp disorder associated with Malassezia dysbiosis and increased sebum production. AMPamide has been suggested to have anti-inflammatory and sebum-regulating effects, but its clinical efficacy and microbiome-modulating effects in SD remain unclear.
Objective:
To evaluate the clinical efficacy and scalp microbiome changes following 4 weeks of use of an AMPamide-containing shampoo in patients with SD.
Methods:
In this observational study, 30 patients with SD applied an AMPamide-containing shampoo for 4 consecutive weeks. Clinical outcomes, including sebum levels and overall severity scores, were assessed. Scalp bacterial and fungal communities were analyzed to evaluate α- and β-diversity and changes in Malassezia composition.
Results:
Treatment resulted in significant reductions in sebum levels and clinical severity scores, particularly in erythema, dandruff, and pruritus. Bacterial community composition remained largely stable, while fungal α-diversity increased, and β-diversity analysis revealed a decrease in the ratio of Malassezia restricta to Malassezia globosa.
Conclusion
AMPamide-containing shampoo was associated with improved clinical symptoms and a shift toward a more balanced fungal community composition in patients with SD, supporting its potential as a non-steroidal therapeutic option for SD.
3.The present and future of fecal microbiota transplantation
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2026;69(1):40-47
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has emerged as one of the most effective interventions for restoring gut microbial balance through the reintroduction of a healthy donor microbiome. The established clinical indication for FMT currently remains limited to recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). This review aims to summarize the current understanding, evidence-based recommendations, and future perspectives regarding the clinical application of FMT.Current concepts: The 2024 American Gastroenterological Association guideline conditionally recommends microbiota-based therapies for adults with rCDI after completion of standard antibiotic treatment and suggests that conventional FMT may be considered in mildly to moderately immunocompromised patients. In contrast, its use is discouraged in severely immunocompromised individuals, and not recommended for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome because of insufficient evidence. Increasing evidence implicates the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including neurologic and metabolic disorders. In parallel, advances in standardized preparations and the development of next-generation microbiota-based therapeutics underscore the broader therapeutic potential of FMT. However, outside the context of rCDI, both clinical effectiveness and long-term safety remain uncertain, and substantial challenges persist with respect to donor selection, product standardization, and procedural consistency.Discussion and conclusion: With an improved understanding of the mechanisms underlying dysbiosis and the accumulation of validated safety data, microbiota-based therapies are expected to evolve into additional therapeutic options for a variety of diseases. However, at present, clinical use should remain restricted to C. difficile infection, particularly rCDI, and should be limited to clinical settings supported by evidence-based guidelines.

Journal of the Korean Society of Biological Therapies in Psychiatry 2026;32(1):76-84
Objectives:
This study examined factors associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Korean adults.
Methods:
Using data from 5,620 participants in the 9th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, obesity was defined as body mass index ≥25 kg/m2 and HRQoL assessed by the health-related quality of life instrument with 8 items (HINT-8). Complex survey weights were applied.
Results:
General linear and multiple regression analyses showed that among women, obesity was significantly associated with lower HINT-8 scores (B=-0.008, p=0.032), while no association was found in men. Age, household income, education, perceived stress, and smoking were also significantly related to HRQoL in both sexes.
Conclusions
HRQoL in Korean adults is influenced by obesity, socioeconomic status, and mental health indicators. The adverse effect of obesity observed only in women highlights the need for sex-specific public health strategies and the relevance of culturally adapted tools such as the HINT-8.

Journal of Veterinary Science 2026;27(2):07-2025
Objective:
We investigated the distribution of AI viruses in fecal samples from wild bird habitats (and nearby poultry-farm areas) surveyed between September and March from 2019 to 2025 and identified associated epidemiological risk factors.
Methods:
Samples were screened for influenza A (M, H5, H7) genes using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), subjected to virus isolation in embryonated chicken eggs, and subtyped by PCR and sequencing. Host species were identified through DNA barcoding. Relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals were estimated for province, month, and waterfowl density.
Results:
Overall prevalence of HPAI and low pathogenic AI (LPAI) virus was 0.10% and 3.21%, respectively. HPAI virus was continuously isolated since 2020–2021, except 2019– 2020, while LPAI prevalence steadily increased (3.01%–4.35%). Twelve hemagglutinin (H1–H12) subtypes were identified in 1,722 isolates, and H3 (16.5%) was the most prevalent, followed by H5 (11.1%) and H7 (5.2%). LPAI H5N3 (55.7%) and H7N7 (75.5%) were the predominant H5 and H7 subtypes, respectively. Detection was higher in western coastal provinces, and higher mallard/spot-billed duck density and sampling in September– December were associated with increased risk.
Conclusions
and Relevance: Continued surveillance of migratory-bird habitats can provide early warning of HPAIV incursions and support targeted biosecurity measures in high-risk regions and seasons.

Investigative and Clinical Urology 2026;67(1):72-78
Purpose:
Testicular torsion is a urological emergency necessitating immediate surgical intervention. However, the altered medical environment during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic posed several challenges and the current study aimed to analyze its effects on the treatment of pediatric testicular torsion cases.
Materials and Methods:
We retrospectively analyzed 47 pediatric patients diagnosed with testicular torsion at Severance Children's Hospital from 2009 to 2022. Patients were categorized into pre–COVID-19 (n=38) and COVID-19 (n=8) groups. Data were collected for each patient, and the differences between the two groups were statistically analyzed.
Results:
The patients’ median age was from 13 years (range, 1–19 years) to 13 years (range, 1–16 years) between the pre–COVID-19 and COVID-19 period (p=0.309). The analysis revealed a significant difference between the pre–COVID-19 and COVID-19 groups in the time from symptom onset to emergency department arrival (6.4 hours [0.7–120.0] vs. 20.0 hours [1.3–288.0], p=0.031) and the time from symptom onset to surgery start (19.5 hours [4.5–124.3] vs. 28.5 hours [6.1–293.4], p=0.047). The median postoperative size of the affected testis was 9.8 mL (range, 2.0–13.9 mL) during the COVID-19 period, compared to 1.6 mL (range, 0.1–7.3 mL) in pre–COVID-19 period (p=0.012). The testicular volume ratio (affected/unaffected) was used to evaluate outcomes across patients with varying ages and testicular sizes.
Conclusions
The current study shows that pandemic-related delays in treatment may worsen ischemic injury in testicular torsion, emphasizing the importance of timely intervention even during global crises.

Journal of Breast Cancer 2026;29(2):141-153
Purpose:
Based on the KEYNOTE-522 study, neoadjuvant pembrolizumab plus chemotherapy has become the standard treatment for early-stage triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).This study evaluated the real-world efficacy, safety, and predictors of pathologic complete response (pCR) in Korean patients.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 174 patients with early-stage TNBC who received the KEYNOTE-522 regimen (neoadjuvant pembrolizumab plus paclitaxel and carboplatin, followed by doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide) at a tertiary cancer center between August 2022 and July 2024. We assessed the primary endpoints, including pCR rate and event-free survival (EFS). We performed univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses to identify independent predictors of pCR.
Results:
The median patient age was 50 years (range, 24–74 years). The clinical stages were II and III in 79.3% and 20.1% of patients, respectively, and 10.9% had clinical N3 disease. The overall pCR rate was 62.1%, and the N3 subgroup had a pCR rate of 47.4%. On multivariable analysis, high baseline Ki-67 expression (≥ median, 75%) was significantly associated with pCR (odds ratio, 2.84; 95% confidence interval, 1.45 to 5.66; p = 0.002). At a median followup of 18.4 months, the 12-month EFS rate was 97.4%, with significantly superior outcomes observed in patients who achieved pCR compared with those who did not achieve pCR (100% vs. 93.1%, p = 0.007). The treatment completion rate was 92.0%, and immune-related adverse events occurred in 13.8% of patients.
Conclusion
In this real-world analysis of one of the largest Asian cohorts of patients with earlystage TNBC treated with neoadjuvant pembrolizumab, the KEYNOTE-522 regimen demonstrated substantial efficacy and manageable toxicity, consistent with the original trial findings.

The Journal of Korean Academy of Prosthodontics 2025;63(1):31-39
Crossbite refers to a condition where there are remaining teeth, but none of the teeth are in occlusal contact, resulting in the loss of vertical support. When posterior vertical stop is lost, it is important to appropriately restore this support and create a harmonious occlusal plane. In this case, the patient had lost posterior support but declined surgical intervention due to a history of osteoporosis and the associated risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). To restore the vertical space required for prosthetic rehabilitation, the vertical dimension was increased. The missing posterior teeth were replaced using removable partial dentures. Cross-mounting was performed, and the metal copings of the surveyed crowns and the framework of the final removable partial denture were 3D printed. After the treatment was completed, the patient expressed satisfaction with both functions and aesthetics. Regular follow-ups were conducted to monitor oral hygiene and occlusal stability.

Journal of the Korean Neurological Association 2025;43(1):45-49
Cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by a biallelic expansion of pentanucleotide repeats in the RFC1 gene. Previous studies have reported up to 22% of patients with late-onset ataxia harbor this pathogenic repeat expansion. Despite its relatively high prevalence, CANVAS is often underdiagnosed because the disease is not well recognized and genetic testing is not performed in clinical practice. Here, we present a patient with characteristic clinical features, confirmed by genetic testing.

Journal of Korean Medical Science 2025;40(13):e49-
Background:
Barriers to treatment with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in South Korea remain incompletely characterized. We analyze a nationwide prospective cohort to determine patient-level features associated with delayed presentation and non-treatment of potential IVT-eligible patients.
Methods:
We identified consecutive patients with AIS from 01/2011 to 08/2023 from a multicenter and prospective acute stroke registry in Korea. Patients were defined as IVT candidates if they presented within 4.5 hours from the last known well, had no lab evidence of coagulopathy, and had National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) ≥ 4. Multivariable generalized linear mixed regression models were used to investigate the associations between their characteristics and the IVT candidates or the use of IVT among the candidates.
Results:
Among 84,103 AIS patients, 41.0% were female, with a mean age of 69 ± 13 years and presentation NIHSS of 4 [interquartile range, 1–8]. Out of these patients, 13,757 (16.4%) were eligible for IVT, of whom 8,179 (59.5%) received IVT. Female sex (adjusted risk ratio [RR], 0.90; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.86–0.94) and lower years of education (adjusted RR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.84–0.97 for 0–3 years, compared to ≥ 13 years) were associated with a decreased likelihood of presenting as eligible for IVT after AIS; meanwhile, young age (adjusted RR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.01–1.24 for ≤ 44 years, compared to 75–84 years) was associated with an increased likelihood of being an IVT candidate. Among those who were eligible for IVT, only age was significantly associated with the use of IVT (adjusted RR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.03–1.16 for age 65–74 and adjusted RR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.76–0.90 for ≥ 85 years, respectively).
Conclusion
Most patients with AIS present outside IVT eligibility in South Korea, and only 60% of eligible patients were ultimately treated. We identified increased age, female sex and lower education as key features on which to focus interventions for improving IVT utilization.
